  Taiki x Yaten

Image: Taiki and Yaten.Taiki and . . . Yaten? 0.0 Having long been a favorite pairing of fanfic writers and fanartists, I thought that it was about time this possible couple got some attention on this site. I was mostly inspired to finally get off my lazy bum and write these paragraphs when I read this email from Trish:

In all of your ramblings about Taiki's love life you seem to have neglected the fact that there quite possibly could be something going on between Taiki and Yaten. They seem to care more about each other than about Seiya. In fact I believe that there could be something going on between these two, and It wouldn't exactly be the first homosexual couple in the series. In fact most of the characters on Sailor Moon are attracted to people of the same gender. I'm not saying that Taiki and Yaten wouldn't look great with any of the girls, It's just they don't seem all that interested in them.

Now, I wouldn't necessarily agree that Taiki and Yaten care for each other more than they care about Seiya, although the antagonistic roles that they're forced into during the course of the anime certainly gives that impression. The important question is whether they do - or could possibly - love each other in a romantic sense.

That there's a deep bond between the two already, there's no doubt. Taiki is one of the few characters that Yaten is openly affectionate toward (the other two being Princess Kakyuu and to a lesser degree, Seiya). Taiki, on the other hand, seems to have an actual preference for Yaten's company, which is pretty unusual coming from someone who likes to be left alone most of the time. The two are almost always seen together - but that COULD be because Seiya is always running off by himself, to chase around a certain dumpling-haired girl . . .

This is just my opinion, but if a relationship did develop between the two, it would probably stem from mutual emotional dependence (or co-dependence, which might be the more accurate term, despite its negative conotation). Both Taiki and Yaten are constantly surrounded by loneliness and pain, and I do honestly see them turning to each other for support and comfort. You can see this happening even in the anime series, although the emotional support is largely silent. Taiki and Yaten may just sit around staring at the walls and not talking to each other, but sometimes, especially when faced with a very depressing or traumatic situation, just *being* beside a person you love is the best support that there is. It's not exactly the most healthy form of emotional support, but knowing Taiki's tendency to hide his emotions and Yaten's tendency to do just the same, it's probably the best that either could hope for, at this stage of their character development.

Now, you could read into this whatever you want. Some might look at Taiki and Yaten and conclude that it's nothing more than brotherly/sisterly love, or the love between two best friends. Others might see something deeper, or at least the potential for something deeper.
