Seiya Kou
"Everyone, thank you all for gathering here today! I'm Seiya
Kou. I'm a member of the Three Lights, and a bit of an idol. I get
swarmed by crowds of fans, and I do get tired of having no privacy
every day, but singing with all my heart at concerts is such a good
feeling."
Seiya Kou is technically the youngest member of the Three Lights. He is the leader of the Sailor Starlights and also the lead singer of the Three Lights. Seiya does tend to be a bit full of himself. He seems to enjoy the fame and fortune that his celebrity status has bestowed upon him. Seiya is cocky, arrogant, witty, and has a malicious sense of humor. He is also a very athletic person, and enjoys all sorts of sports - especially football. Despite his somewhat rude attitude, Seiya begins very early in the series to show a softer, gentler side. Seiya is capable of being romantic and charming when he wants to be. Especially in the presence of a certain girl with an odd hairstyle that makes it look like she's wearing dumplings on top of her head...
"Inviting you on dates, volunteering as your bodyguard, meeting with you for a crash course on softball . . . Taiki was shocked, and said that I care too much . . . I'm the type who acts immediately on my feelings, so I didn't think too deeply about it, but maybe Taiki's right. And I'm falling in love."
Seiya is impulsive and impatient. He doesn't give much thought to the consequences when he plunges into courting Usagi. At first, he admits that she reminds her of Princess Kakyuu. But as the series progresses, he develops a geniune infatuation with her. Despite the complications that arise in their relationship, Seiya never stops trying to win Usagi's heart.
"Ever since we first met at the airport, I've surely had you on my mind. But is it that as a soldier I was charmed by the power you emit? Or is it that, carrying the heart of a boy, I was charmed by you? All I can say is this. I love the light you're carrying! Got it? You're an extremely lucky, happy person to be cared for so much by this Seiya-sama."
Seiya's the type of guy who just wants to have fun. He's intelligent, but doesn't really apply himself to school. He jokes around and teases the other two Lights, and also likes to tease Usagi's friends. But he does have a very, very serious side to his personality. Seiya is easily the most compassionate and caring of the Three Lights. Initially, he is the only one of the three that begins to care about the people of the Earth. The other two continue to view the Earthlings as annoyances that distract them from their mission, and do not share Seiya's sympathetic attitude until much later in the season. Seiya is intensely loyal to his loved ones - Taiki, Yaten, Usagi, and Kakyuu. This shows most of all when he is fighting as Sailor Starfighter.
"If Galaxia's followers happen to take actions like rioting, I
just won't leave them alone! Fighter Star Power, Make Up! A
wandering shooting star piercing through the darkness, Sailor
Starfighter, stage on!"
Sailor Starfighter has a lot of pride as a Senshi, but not above recognizing the fact that sometimes Galaxia's minions require . . . um, perhaps a bit more force than the Starlights alone can muster. Fighter is the first to openly embrace a partnership with Sailor Moon. Fighter also tends to dominate any fight that she enters, and can easily defeat any phage in combat. But she also realizes that Sailor Moon can restore the phages to their human forms, and thus lets her do so and avoids unneccesary bloodshed. Eventually, Fighter also admits that she wants to protect the people of the planet Earth, even though it's not her duty or her obligation to do so.
Fighter is a survivor. She is determined to find Kakyuu, protect Kakyuu, and defeat Galaxia. In fact, her mission is really all that she has left. Since her home planet was destroyed, she has focused mostly on planning an assault against Galaxia. It's no doubt that Sailor Starfighter would have remained focused on her mission, if Tsukino Usagi had not entered the life of her civilian alter-ego . . .
"Don't feel bad that I'm in a one-sided love, Odango."
Both Seiya and Fighter have a strong sense of pride, and it shows in both manifestations - for example, Seiya plays competitive sports, while Sailor Starfighter becomes enraged when Sailor Uranus points out that the Starlights were unable to protect their princess. Although Seiya is used to playing and winning, in the end he cannot win the heart of the girl that matters to him the most. Seiya leaves Earth at the end of the season as a much humbler man. Usagi taught him how to love, but also how to lose graciously.
